The Fading City
The Fading City, Exhibition 2 - 14 March 2020, The Hive, New Standard Works, Birmingham
For the exhibition The Faded City, Tracey Thorne produced a new body of work a collection of ten monochrome screenprints on paper.
The collection explores the fading wall advertising signs sometimes called ‘ghost signs’ painted on buildings in Birmingham. These fading signs are part of the cities narrative painted on its walls and offer an alternative way of navigating the streets to reveal the fading stories of these buildings.
The collection is a result of six years of walking, exploring and photographing the streets of Birmingham to record the disappearing hand-painted advertising signs. It provides a document to the craft of the sign-painting that was once dominant in the city.
The limited-edition monochrome screenprints were made from digital photographs and printed on paper. The collection was exhibited as part of a joint show called The Faded City on the 2 March 2020 at The Hive Gallery, New Standard Works, in Jewellery Quarter Birmingham in a project supported by Arts Council England.
A limited-edition Ghost Signs Zine accompanies the collection published by Tracey Thorne with support from Arts Council England.
Limited edition screenprints from the collection The Faded City are available for purchase as framed or unframed images for enquires contact the artist.
